Keys to Success for Working with a Board of Advisor

A Winning Mindset – Treating Your Career as Your Business

  • CareerTruth enables you to own your career as if you were the owner of a business.
  • Leveraging mentors, sponsors, and advisors is akin to “pouring gasoline on” your goals and path forward. People go faster and are more effective with others’ support.
  • When you engage an Advisor within CareerTruth, you are not “assigning out” a goal. Goals are always for you as the individual to own; inviting an Advisor to view one of your goals is meant to drive accountability – knowing someone you admire has eyes on your goal alone will help you accomplish that goal!
  • It’s wise to not expect the same level of engagement from each advisor. For example, one may be quick to make introductions that will help you achieve a goal, while others may simply provide encouragement and validation over chat. Don’t assume any level of engagement other than their visibility into your goal – everything else is gravy.

Driving Engagement

  • When you engage an Advisor, it’s expected of you to be the driver in the relationship, which includes scheduling any in person or virtual meetings.
  • Prioritize their schedule. If they only have 7 AM open, then you try to make that happen.
  • Come prepared with an informal agenda to any meeting – i.e. at least three questions to drive conversation and gain insight.

Share the Real You

  • When you share your Values, your Why (Purpose), your priorities for this season of your life, people see the whole you and are more invested.
  • Be vulnerable. Assume your Advisor already knows you’re talented, so no need to appear to have it all together. They will feel like it is a more valuable use of their time if you’re sharing real fears and concerns, which crop up for everyone.

Your Success Is Their Success

  •  Be willing to provide updates that require no response on their part. Advisors will be more likely to engage and support if you make it easy and enjoyable to have you as an Advisee.
  • Along with sharing vulnerability and concerns, be sure to share your wins. Everyone appreciates good news and growth. Over time, your success will feel like their success.
